When someone says the word ‘condom’ for most people the image of an external condom comes to mind. But did you know that not only are there many types of external condoms, there are also insertive condoms and forms of protection for oral sex on vulvas/anuses known as dental dams?

Condoms (both internal and external) are used for penetrative sex with body parts or sex toys. Internal condoms look like little pouches that are inserted into the anus or fronthole/vagina before sex. They can be a great way for the person receiving penetration to take the lead on the forms of protection they feel safe using. External condoms are used to cover either the penis or a phallic shaped sex toy for penetration and can also be used as a barrier around a penis during oral sex. Check out our sections on internal and external condoms to learn more.

Dental dams are less commonly known, but a fantastic tool for folks who give or receive oral sex on a vulva / anus. They are thin sheets of material that create a barrier between the tongue/mouth and genitals/holes. They can also be made from unused, non-lubricated, condoms. Check out our section on dental dams to learn more.

It’s great to know what options are out there for you, so you can make informed decisions about your sexual health. Protection doesn’t have to be boring or bothersome, it can be fun to try new things and figure out what makes your body feel good and puts your mind at ease!
